Is Spain still liveable? (Spoiler: yes. And how!)

We often get asked: ‘But is Spain still liveable?’
It’s an understandable question, especially if you follow the news. Sometimes it seems as if Spain is permanently plagued by storms, floods and scorching heat waves. As if the whole country is ablaze or baking under a merciless sun.

But the reality is – as so often – much more nuanced.

Spain is big. Very big. From north to south, you travel more than 1,200 kilometres, and from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean Sea, another 1,000. That’s like driving from Amsterdam to Sicily, but all within one country. So the climate here varies as much as the landscape.

When there is flooding in Galicia, the sun is shining in Andalusia.
When a storm sweeps across the sea in Valencia, people in Madrid are sitting on terraces.
And when a forest fire breaks out in Extremadura, 99.9% of Spain remains untouched.

That’s not an opinion – those are figures. Data from the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition shows that the number of wildfires in Spain has fallen by more than 25% in the last five years. Yes, there are still fires, but there are fewer than before. However, you rarely read about this in the newspapers, because “fire prevention” is simply less exciting than “sea of flames destroys village”.

And what about here in Gaianes, home to our naturist paradise La Vida Soñada?
In the summer of 2025, the thermometer rose above 40°C on exactly two occasions.
Two days. On the other 93 days of summer, the temperature remained between 28 and 35 degrees – hot, yes, but perfectly bearable.
Two days. On the other 93 days of summer, the temperature remained between 28 and 35 degrees – warm, yes,but wonderfully liveable. And perfect for enjoying the outdoors naked from early morning until late at night! Every night, a pleasant breeze blows down from the mountains, meaning that air conditioning is almost never needed at night.

Don’t get us wrong: we don’t deny climate change. The earth is warming up, and that’s serious. But we do advocate for nuance. Because the way news is reported these days doesn’t help us understand reality.

The media thrive on attention. On clicks. And clicks are generated by alarm bells, not nuance. ‘Record heat in Spain!’ sounds more exciting than ‘Summer day in Gaianes, 32 degrees, sangria in the shade.’

So here’s our tip: consume less news.
Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by the daily stream of doom and gloom.
Do a news detox.

And why not do it with us?
Come and enjoy naturism, sunshine and birdsong in 2026 instead of the drone of newsreaders.
